Dev Deepawali, also known as Dev Diwali, is one of the most divine and spectacular festivals celebrated in Varanasi — the city of Lord Shiva. Observed on the full moon night (Kartik Purnima), fifteen days after Diwali, it marks the victory of Lord Shiva over the demon Tripurasura. On this sacred night, the ghats of River Ganga come alive with millions of flickering diyas (lamps), illuminating the holy river with celestial beauty.
In 2026, Dev Deepawali will be celebrated on November 24 . The celebration begins with evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat and continues along all 84 ghats of Varanasi. The entire stretch from Assi Ghat to Raj Ghat glows with light, devotion, and joy.
According to Hindu mythology, on this day, all gods descend to Earth to take a holy dip in the Ganges. Hence, it is believed that taking a bath in the Ganga on this day purifies the soul and washes away all sins. The festival also coincides with Guru Nanak Jayanti and Tripuri Purnima, making it spiritually powerful and unique to Varanasi.
The iconic Ganga Aarti during Dev Deepawali is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Priests dressed in saffron perform synchronized rituals with fire lamps, conch shells, and chants dedicated to the river goddess.
More than a million earthen lamps are lit along the ghats and in temples. Locals, pilgrims, and tourists together create a mesmerizing scene that reflects in the calm waters of the Ganga.
