Kashi Ropeway: A New Way to Explore Varanasi from the Sky

Kashi Ropeway: A New Way to Explore Varanasi from the Sky

The city of Varanasi is known for its spirituality, temples, and the timeless beauty of the Ganga ghats. But in 2025, it is adding a modern marvel to its legacy — the Kashi Ropeway, India’s first public urban cable car system.

This innovative transport project is not just about convenience; it’s about transforming how people experience the holy city. The ropeway provides a fast, eco-friendly, and scenic way to move across Varanasi, especially in areas where traffic and narrow lanes make road travel difficult.

What is the Kashi Ropeway?

The Kashi Ropeway is a 3.75-kilometer-long cable car route connecting five major locations:

  • Varanasi Cantt Railway Station

  • Kashi Vidyapith

  • Rath Yatra

  • Girja Ghar

  • Godowlia Chowk

This route connects key religious, educational, and market areas—making it ideal for pilgrims, students, tourists, and local commuters alike.

Travel time between Cantt and Godowlia, which usually takes 45 minutes by road, will now take just around 15 minutes by ropeway.

Features of the Kashi Ropeway

  • Total Length: 3.75 km

  • Number of Stations: 5

  • Gondolas: Over 150 cabins

  • Capacity: 6,000 passengers per hour (both directions)

  • Cabin Capacity: 10 passengers per cabin

  • Estimated Daily Users: 96,000

  • Operating Hours: Approx. 16 hours/day

Project Status (July 2025 Update)

  • Construction of three major stations is complete.

  • Trial runs have already started between Cantt and Rath Yatra.

  • Final testing is ongoing, and the complete ropeway is expected to be fully operational by August 2025.

  • Minor delays near Godowlia are being addressed through legal and environmental channels.

Why the Ropeway Matters for Travelers

1. Faster Access:
Visitors arriving at Varanasi Cantt Railway Station can directly board the ropeway and reach Godowlia, near the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor, in minutes.

2. Comfort and Safety:
The cabins are safe, covered, and ideal for families, elderly pilgrims, and first-time visitors.

3. Scenic Views:
As the cable car glides above rooftops, markets, and historic structures, travelers get a rare aerial view of the city.

4. Eco-Friendly Transit:
The ropeway helps reduce traffic congestion and pollution—an important step for sustainable tourism.
