Kashi Ropeway: A New Aerial Journey Over the Spiritual City

Published by Shiva Kashi Travels | Updated: July 2025

Varanasi, the spiritual capital of India, is now soaring to new heights—literally. The Kashi Ropeway project is the first urban cable car transportation system in India, revolutionizing how pilgrims and tourists experience the city. With a promise of cutting down travel time and offering stunning aerial views of Varanasi’s timeless charm, this initiative is a perfect blend of tradition and innovation.

 What is the Kashi Ropeway?

The Kashi Ropeway is a 3.75 km-long urban cable car system designed to decongest Varanasi's narrow lanes and busy junctions. The route connects Varanasi Cantt Railway Station to Godowlia Chowk, passing through five key locations:

  • Varanasi Cantt

  • Kashi Vidyapith

  • Rath Yatra

  • Girja Ghar

  • Godowlia

The journey that typically takes over 45 minutes by road will now take just 15 minutes by ropeway.

 Key Features of the Ropeway

  • Length: 3.75 kilometers

  • Stations: 5

  • Cabins: 150+ gondolas

  • Capacity: 6,000 passengers per hour

  • Operating Hours: 16 hours a day

  • Frequency: Every 90 seconds

This project is part of the Parvatmala Yojana by the Government of India and aims to enhance eco-friendly and efficient public transport in hilly and congested urban areas.

Current Status (as of July 2025)

  • Construction of three stations (Cantt, Vidyapith, Rath Yatra) is complete.

  • Final testing and trial runs are ongoing.

  • The full system is expected to be operational by August 2025, barring final clearances and land acquisition near Godowlia.

  • Some sections are delayed due to Supreme Court interventions and drainage concerns in heritage zones.

Whether you’re a pilgrim heading to Kashi Vishwanath Temple or a tourist exploring the ghats, the Kashi Ropeway offers multiple advantages:

Time-Saving: Skip the crowded roads and reach Godowlia faster.
